How much does therapy cost?

A Guide to Fees for Counselling and Psychotherapy Services

How much does therapy cost? The cost of therapy can vary based on factors such as the type of counseling, session length, and therapist qualifications. At Pivot Counselling we believe that mental health support should be accessible, so we offer transparent pricing and flexible payment options. Whether you’re seeking therapy for a child, teen, family, or a friend, we provide clear information on session fees and potential insurance coverage to help you plan your care with confidence.

Initial Consultation

  • Your first session is free.

  • It’s a 15 min phone call or video call to review your needs and assess how I might be able to support you or your family member.

  • This initial session is helpful to assess overall symptoms and presenting issue.

  • Primary focus is on assessment with the primary aim to manage expectations and introduce the counselling process.

  • The session is about first impressions and establishing “fit” – it’s not all about therapy.

College/University Students/Sliding Scale

  • 50-60 min sessions.
  • $100 to $150 / session.
  • Most post-secondary students have insurance coverage for counselling through their academic institution benefits or you may also be eligible through your parents’ insurance up until 21-25years of age.

  • Current rates for students have been reduced to $150/hour session rate using school or parental insurance coverage followed by $100/session once the insurance is exhausted.

  • College/University students can only be at this classification if issues are college/university related issues (i.e. not eligible if accessing couple or family services).

Individuals

  • 50-60 min sessions.
  • $180 / session.
  • This is an individual counselling session at our standard rate.

  • Individual rate differs in that you can not apply the university/college student rates if the participant is attending university or college.

  • Couples and Family counselling rate will be dropped to Individual Rate if one individual is only in attendance.

  • Your first session is free.

Couples

  • 50-60 min sessions.
  • $200 / session.
  • Couples therapy rates are based on two people attending the session regardless of the time an individual might spend in a given session.
  • The time allotted to each party is separated based on a 50/50 division of the session.

  • Alternately, time can be allotted through negotiation among all participants in the session with an eye on equity rather than equality.

Families

  • 50-60 min sessions.
  • $200 / session.
  • Family therapy rates are based on a maximum of four people attending the session.

  • Not all family members will have an equal amount of time to discuss their issues.

  • Instead, time is allotted through negotiation among all participants in the session with the eye of equity rather than equality.

  • As children are often passive participants, adult participants should allow time for them to express their experiences, ideas and feelings.
